About GE at HKBU

At the core of any university’s education is a commitment to the philosophy that successful and satisfying lives require a wide range of knowledge and skills. These skills include effective communication (in a variety of forms); an appreciation of one’s cultural heritage and how it impacts the global community; an understanding of the sciences and technological change as it shapes our natural environment; an appreciation for the arts as it nurtures our souls; familiarity with diverse cultures and how cultural movements contribute to societies and their values; an ability to reason logically and quantitatively and to constantly search for “meaning”; and most of all the ethical values that shape our lives and societies.

Hong Kong Baptist University is deeply committed to the notion that General Education will augment and enhance specialized training of our students with the aim to cultivate a knowledgeable, informed, and workforce ready graduates to face the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of GE courses, students will be able to:

  1. Communicate effectively as speakers and writers in both English and Chinese;
  2. Access and manage complex information and problems using technologically appropriate means;
  3. Apply appropriate mathematical reasoning to address problems in everyday life;
  4. Acquire an active and healthy lifestyle;
  5. Use historical and cultural perspectives to gain insight into contemporary issues;
  6. Apply various value systems to decision-making in personal, professional, and social/political situations;
  7. Make connections among a variety of disciplines to gain insight into contemporary personal, professional, and community situations.

GE Courses:

All students must fulfill at least 38 units (14 courses) of GE. General Education consists of two parts – Core Requirements: Applicable to all students regardless of their majors. A student must complete 6 units of University English, 3 units of University Chinese, and 3 units of Public Speaking, and a course in Information Management Technology, Numeracy, Physical Education, History and Civilization, and Values and the Meaning of Life.

Distribution Requirements: This includes 12 units where a student will take a minimum of 3 units from each of the 4 Distribution categories of Arts, Business, Communication/Visual Arts, Science/Chinese Medicine, and Social Science.

3 Units of Public Speaking

 

3 Units of Information Management Technology

 

3 units of Numeracy

 

2 units of Physical Education (1 unit each)

 

3 units of History and Civilization

 

3 units of Values and Meaning of Life

Distribution Requirements:

3 units of Art

 

3 units of Business

 

3 units of Communication/ Visual Arts

 

3 Units of Science/Chinese Medicine

 

3 units of Social Sciences

Interdisciplinary courses

Interdisciplinary Courses will be double-listed in the respective categories.  Students will be allowed to decide which category they would like the course to fulfill.
