Welcome Message

Dear Students,

Welcome to Hong Kong Baptist University! We are delighted that you will be pursuing your undergraduate education at our institution. As part of your academic preparation you will be taking courses in General Education (GE) as well as courses in your chosen field.

GE provides the development of knowledge, perception, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand society’s traditions and past, its accomplishments and aspirations, its relation and responsibility to the natural world, its diversity and plurality, and its problems and needs. The goal is for the students to attain a sense of self within society that invites a continuing desire and ability to learn and work with others for future realization of the human potential.

As the Director of this Programme, I am delighted that you will be taking GE courses. As part of your academic preparation, GE courses are designed to develop intellectual and practical skills, including proficiency in written, oral, and visual communication; inquiry techniques; critical and creative thinking; quantitative applications; teamwork; and problem-solving.

As you take a wide range of courses in GE, you will build knowledge of diverse peoples and cultures and of the natural and physical world through the study of mathematics, sciences and technologies, histories, humanities, arts, and social sciences. Courses in GE gives you an opportunity to exercise individual and social responsibilities through the study of ethical principles and reasoning, application of civic knowledge, interaction with diverse cultures, and engagement with global issues. GE courses are the stepping stone for the whole-person development.

Our hope is that you will be able to integrate these abilities and capacities, adapting them to new settings, questions, and responsibilities. I encourage you to challenge your intellectual capabilities by engaging in your learning with an open mind and curiosity. Again, welcome to our University.

Prof Reza Hoshmand,

Director of GE
